STEP 1: SASSI

All TANF recipients are required to complete the substance abuse subtle screening inventory (SASSI).

A link will be sent by text or email to complete the assessment. Once received, open the link and begin the assessment. Please base your answers on the last 12 months. Be sure to read the instructions on the top of each page to help with the different type of questions, as some might be confusing to answer.

The results will be available immediately. Depending on the results, there are three areas you may need to do an oral swab for further assessment.

  1. Random – Different answers to the same questions.
  2. Defensiveness – Answers to questions indicating a lack of trust in others.
  3. Substance abuse

The screening is available in Spanish and accommodations are available upon request.

STEP 2: Rapid Oral Swab Drug Testing

There are two different types of drug tests that are used, but both have a similar process.

Be sure to show up on time at the facility provided by your case worker/family coach and bring a state-issued ID.

If you have a valid Oklahoma Medical Marijuana card, please bring it with you on your assigned testing day.

Do not put anything in your mouth, including beverages, food, gum, tobacco products, or water, 10 minutes prior to your test. Failure to do so could tamper your results and require you to restart the testing process.

First, you will inspect the package to ensure there is no damage. Next, open the package and remove the collection device by the handle. It is very important that you do not touch the collection pad.

Then, rub the collection device in your mouth to initiate saliva until the collection pad is moist. You will see the red indicator on the device when there is enough saliva.

Confirm with your Assessment Specialist there is enough saliva, and you may remove the device from your mouth. Then, place it back in the container and lock it in to place. Keep the container on a flat surface.

Depending on the type of drug test you take, one will give you quick results that are available within 15 minutes.  The other drug test is sent to a lab for confirmation with a medical doctor and will take a few days. Be prepared to provide proof of those prescribed medications when a medical review officer from the lab follows up with you. Expect a phone call from i3 Screening at this number 877-585-7366. After you have completed your drug test, you will be able to pursue the plan developed with your family coach. If you have questions about your results you can call 877-585-7366 to speak to the i3 Screening lab.

STEP 5: CASAS

CASAS will be the next assessment taken after the SASSI. It is completed on-site and your Oklahoma Human Service worker will contact you with the date, time and location.

The CASAS consists of educational assessments in math and reading. The results are available immediately and you will be given the scores at the joint staffing with your case worker/family coach and community partners.

These scores assist in placements, such as a High School Equivalency program, literacy work ready programs, special projects and other appropriate placements, so it is important you try your best.

STEP 6: COPSystem

This survey consists of three short non-timed surveys and will be completed after the CASAS. The surveys help determine what you value in the workplace, subjects you might be interested in learning about, highlights abilities you already possess and basic job search abilities.

These scores will be available immediately up completion and you will receive a copy of the results at the joint staffing with an Oklahoma Human Services representative and community partners.

STEP 7: Woodcock-Johnson IV

Everyone learns differently. Sometimes scores on the early assessments will result in a referral for a more specific, individually administered assessment called the WJ4 (Woodcock-Johnson IV).

This assessment takes about two hours to complete. Results are available immediately and can sometimes qualify you for additional support, like participation in a self- advocacy program, extended time on exams and other benefits. The results are confidential and in no way affect your TANF certification, so all you have to do is your best.

STEP 8: Self-Advocacy

Clients who indicate a possible learning disability on the WJ4 assessment are offered ongoing one-on-one coaching and support. For example, assistance is provided with HSE requests and skills to advocate for yourself in the classroom and workplace environments.
